Agency Web Assistant - Affiliation Programs

Affiliation Programs allow web sites to affiliate themselves with products and content from other companies. Companies such as Compaq Computer, Amazon.com, ESPN, Disney, JC Penney and Lycos all have affiliation programs.

How Affiliation Programs Work

The company allows the affiliate to place banners or content on their web page in exchange for commission or free advertising. For example, if you affiliate with Compaq computer you will be given permission to place a Compaq banner on your web site. Compaq will give you access to HTML code to place on your site that will embed your affiliate code. When a user clicks the Compaq banner on your web site they are re-directed to the Compaq web site along with your affiliate code.

Each affiliate program is different however the two general methods of compensation are product purchase or "Click Through". If a user from your site clicks on the banner and then buys a product from Compaq you are paid a commission. The "Click Through" method generally pays a cent or two for each click through and is more common with affiliates that provide information such as search engines.

Products and Content Available Through Affiliate Programs

Affiliate programs have become very popular and the choices of products and content are vast. Affiliate programs can be found for items such as computers, toys, magazines, office products, cigars and more. Some examples of content you can find for your web site are news, search engines, stock quotes, sports scores and movie listings

Affiliate Networks

With the advent of the affiliation programs came affiliation networks. Instead of browsing hundreds of sites to find affiliate programs you can log on to an affiliate network and access dozens of different affiliate programs all from one site. Instead of filling out numerous affiliate applications the user fills out one application at the network level and then clicks on the companies they wish to affiliate with. If the affiliation is approved an e-mail is sent to the approved affiliate telling them where they can access the code to use on their web site.

The following are links to Be Free and Linkshare affiliate networks. Both sites have access to a large number of affiliate programs.
